Mission: Everyday
Location: Shady Side, Maryland
Timeline: The Year of the Apocalypse - 22 January 2012

As the jets began a landing sequence, Lorde shouted, “Seriously, man, you’re not hearing that?”

Spatz simply shook his head, this time worrying Lorde might be having one of his moments.

“Look, that may be something I have to deal with, so if I do, just stick to the plan. I know you can do it. Just keep in mind, if it's bad enough, you and The Watch may be needed.”

The loading bays on the rear of the jets opened and The Spire’s team members poured out into the surrounding area.

Jenny’s father had always preached to her about the mutant devils and how one day they would rise up and try to destroy the world. She always thought that he was crazy, that he was just afraid of them, and just wanted to shut himself away from the world. He had made sure to train her in the things that would allow her to survive in that kind of cruel and unforgiving kind of world.

Not wanting them to take her daughters, she took aim at one of the members of one of the most infamous mutant terrorist groups she had ever heard of and fired her M-16.

The shot struck Lorde in the head then ricocheted back at her as one of his protection spells dropped poor Jenny.

“Milord, are you okay?” Knight asked.

“I’m fine.” He would have been more mad if the woman wasn’t lying face down in a pool of blood. “Do something with those kids.”

The mind wasn’t really Wyrmwood’s playground. Normally she could simply see enough to know what someone’s dreams and fears were. The fact that she used those things against her opponents, made them see what she wanted them to see in the form of illusions, had been the very power that had driven her mother to leave her on the steps of an ancient monastery so many centuries ago. The red-reptilian eyes hadn’t helped, she was certain.

As Seth bellowed out his command, the dragon lady brought her hands to her head, her eyes squeezing shut. “Get out of my head!” Wyrmwood bellowed back, her voice feral and animalistic.

“Wyrmwood!” Lauren cried out, running toward her mentor from where she'd been hiding behind a car at the edge of the road.

She had been a slave to an evil man for far too long to simply allow another to take over her mind. Still, she could feel the change that he was demanding of her, a change that she used only as a last resort, and, as Wyrmwood fought Seth’s influence, she dropped to her knees and cried out in that same rumbling, feral voice, “Run, Lauren!

“No!” Lauren shook her head, stepping forward as the dragon drew Seth’s glare. With his minions down, he was not happy, and it showed on his face and in the fierceness of his red-eyed glare. The spirals on Lauren’s skin and in her hair were nearly incandescent, such that it was hard to look directly at her. “I... I can help. I need to help. You can’t defeat him alone.”

Wyrmwood screamed in agony, a sound that rapidly became a deafening roar that echoed through the cold winter morning, shattering windows and shaking the earth around her. The woman wasn’t about to make it easy for Seth, but she could feel herself changing, her bones elongating, muscles snapping, as her body began its excruciating transformation. The ancient being normally used her illusions to cover the disturbing sight, one that tended to terrify onlookers, but she couldn’t manage it with Seth’s voice screaming in her head. She couldn’t even bring her own voice to obey her commands, the sounds becoming nothing more than guttural snarls as she tried to warn the purple-hued woman away.

“I know who I am now.” Lauren’s voice grew louder as she turned toward Seth. “I am Meskhenet, daughter of Seth, god of Sands, born to be the mortal avatar of the Lord of Chaos!”

The red-eyed god focused more of his attention on her, pulling it away from Syn. Lauren’s hands trembled.

Lauren... what do you think you're doing?? Isolde’s voice inside her head was panicked. Frightened. Go back to the plane! This isn't...

Trust me, Lauren thought back. And pray that I'm right.

Slivers don't pray, Lauren.

Then hope. Lauren silently replied. And I'll pray.

“Meskhenet...” Seth rumbled. “How...?”

She ignored his question and pressed on. “You possessed my father, raped and eventually killed my mother in the old world. You killed my baby brother because he was not a metahuman, kidnapped my children, and slaughtered my ex-husband. I defeated you once, god of chaos, and I can do it again!”

How!? Isolde cried. You haven't even awoken!

He doesn't know that.

You're trying to bluff a god who tricked his brother into his own coffin?? Lauren, I know a lot has changed this time around, but have you lost your mind?

Probably, Lauren conceded. I have to be the one to do this. I don’t know why, but I know that only I can hurt him. I... I don’t remember exactly how, but I know I can. I need... I need to drop my nano and face him.

No! Isolde’s voice was firm. If you awaken without nano...

I remember.

From several steps back, Tina Cyparissus watched. Her family had left with Dyami, but she stayed behind. She saw that look in Lauren’s eyes. She couldn’t let her do this. Not again. Not alone.

AIO! Shut me down!” the transforming dragon lady managed to scream in that disturbing tone of voice, knowing that it was likely a death wish, but even her precious sliver’s voice was being drowned out by the cacophony of chaos in her head. Aio tried to reach Wyrmwood, even tried to obey her command, but, for some reason, even the nano’s safeties were being overridden.

Atlanta, we have a problem! was the last thing that the sliver could manage to communicate before being silenced, all communications with the Tower, and her team, blocked. All that Aio could do was watch in silent horror as the transformation completed, and a great golden dragon, sixty feet long, even dwarfing the god of sands, turned, her tail laying waste to her enclosed surroundings, to face Lauren with the gleaming red eyes of Seth, and a terrifying, ear-splitting roar.

Tim crumpled to the ground, spent and unconscious

“Release her!” Lauren commanded. “Release her, leave this town and these people unharmed, and I will give myself freely!”

“Why? It is a trick,” Seth insisted from Syn’s dragon form. “And behold, for I have a dragon.”
