The tiny owl watched as his two allies confronted the jogger and the gathering mass of newly released mutants. Well, time to move, the shaman thought to himself. The small white owl hopped off the branch it had been resting on and glided quietly behind the house to the backdoor.
A few feet from the house, a transformation began to take place, and when he touched down it was moccasins, not claws, that crunched into the fresh snow.
Susan stayed by the trees as the pale masses passed her. She was planning on waiting. Until the mass of people had passed. Even with her non lethal weapon, she knew fighting a crowd this big would be suicide alone.
She wanted to wait until it was clear, then she could run to the jet and get to safety. But for now, she was stuck there. Only a few of the people that passed her, looked her way. Few saw her as she ducked under a shrub.
Then she heard it. Like a whisper on the wind. A voice that seemed to call out to her. Very faint, but the fear was evident.
Susan looked around and tired to determine where the voice had come from. Again, she heard it. A voice in her heard. A voice that seemed to be coming from where the mass of people were headed from.
Syn looked to the group and said, “We’ll go out the back. I’ll take point. Seamus, Lauren, try to keep everyone close and moving. Aiden, I need you to follow and keep an eye out behind us. Now, let’s go. We have no time to waste.” With that, the diminutive dragon lady stepped by the group of worried family and friends, headed towards the same door that they had entered by.
“Understood.” Lauren nodded. “Talassa, the jet isn’t far. Please stay close. Why don't I carry that for you, Kyle?”
Kyle grinned and almost instantly handed over the large duffel bag he'd hastily packed. “Thanks, Mrs. McArthurs!”
“You're welcome. Keep your mother moving, okay?”
Kyle nodded and went to his mother's side. Talassa was weeping softly as they exited the house, casting longing looks back over her home. “I will no see my home again!” She sobbed.
“Sure you will, Talassa,” Tina promised. “Think of this like a vacation. It's been years since you've been on vacation. You'll like Atlanta.”
As Syn opened the back door, she smiled at the shaman Marshal that was standing there waiting for them. “I’m glad to have you with us, old friend. This is the family that we’re protecting, and we need to move. Formal introductions will have to happen later.”
The traditional dressed native man nodded and smiled to Syn as she addressed him, replying, “We will see them to the jet as quickly as possible. There are many strange threats about. We must move quickly, but with caution.” Talon smiled and waved the family out the door as Syn moved past him, saying, “Come quickly now, no time to waste.”
Ushebti looked at Syn as she scanned for threats, a thoughtful look on his face for a few moments as the family started to move. Finally he spoke to her, stepping away from Melissa’s side and lowering his voice. “Take care. Set will stop at nothing to break the Divine Prison and see himself as the head of a new pantheon, a result that would not benefit mankind.”
Syn stopped briefly, glancing at Ushebti, an eyebrow raised curiously as she studied his eyes. “We’ll have to have a talk later about all of this once we’re out of this mess. For now, it’s our job to get this family to safety. I’ll not let any harm come to them if it’s within my power to stop it,” she said to the odd young man before moving forward once again.
“Thank you,” Ushebti said quietly, before turning back to follow the others leaving the house from the back door.
Seamus took up a middle spot in the line. He offered to take one of the bags, so the family could run, if they had to.
Aiden waited for everyone to get out of the house. Then he reached in and turned the lock on the doorknob. He pulled the door shut and began to listen as best as he could.
The ground rumbled, like a low growl coming from the very ground itself.
Melissa stumbled, reaching out to Ushebti to steady her as she turned, wide-eyed, to look behind her. Several of the others did the same. Her face grew pale.
Lauren’s jaw dropped as she turned. Her spirals glowed brightly. “No...”
A mass of men and women, armed with an array of weapons -- some makeshift, others more professional-looking -- charged toward them. Towering above them stood Tim -- but not Tim. Standing at least twenty feet tall, his red eyes glowed as he sneered down at the metas and humans below.
“BOW BEFORE YOUR GOD, MORTALS!” Tim-Seth’s deep voice made the ground tremble. “BOW, AND I MAY LET YOU LIVE.”
“Like hell...” Lauren muttered under her breath. Her spirals were blindingly bright.
“By Zeus...” Tina breathed. “What the unholy fuck?
Melissa blushed at her aunt’s language.
Talassa took a different technique as she smacked her sister’s arm. “Faustina! Language!”
“Is that... Is that...Tim?” Kyle squinted.
Ushebti cursed in Hebrew, scowling at the dark god.
Seamus did his best to pump out the calm emotions. He knew panic could spell disaster.
Aiden turned, his wings still folded up, but he was unsure if he should prepare to fight or run. It looked like Tim, yet it didn’t.
Talon’s normal smile took on a devilishly wide, almost cat-like appearance. Through strangely pointed teeth, he growled, “Oh, I want some of that guy!” His fingers began changing to claws as he took a step towards Tim-not-Tim. The man truly hated and sought to destroy evil wherever it arose.
“RUN!” Lauren gestured to the family. “To the jet! Quickly! Syn, we need to stop him here! I... I can help.”
“Talon, take them to the plane,” Syn said as her nano swept over her body and she appeared to grow more than a few inches. “Don’t wait on me.” The woman stepped between her charges and the rushing mob, including the supposed deity. Her black, golden-clawed war fans opened with a loud snap and she took up a defensive stance. “Go! Now!”
