Mila was leaning against the wall just outside the danger room where Aiden was at. She had followed Susan and some kid in a wheelchair to the room, but not being family, she stayed outside.
She hadn’t seen Aiden, she only heard he was hurt bad. Susan had done her best to keep her from seeing Aiden. But something kept bugging Mila. “Was it my fault?” She asked herself, before thinking back to the night before. And her flight out of Shady Side Maryland.
“Alright kiddo, I need you to wear this. Now normally you'd be put in white armor, due to being a student, but White is too easily seen.” Aiden said as he passed her a large package. “Go ahead and put it over your lower layer of clothes. Then put a jacket on top.” the winged teen told her.
She left the room to put the armor on and her mother went with her. A few minutes later they both reentered the room.
Alright. I need you to put this harness on and get ready. You’re going to be strapped in tight for the next couple of hours and this armor will give you a way to speak to me.” He turned her around, after tightening her harness. He was sure this one could hold, if he didn’t cross two hundred miles an hour, or vibrate too hard. That meant several stops to get rid of pent up energy.
Mila felt a bit silly with the whole armor and harness thing on. And having Aiden checking straps that were by her crotch made her blush. She understood he had to do it, like a pre-flight check, but it still made her cheeks burn with embarrassment.
“Look, are you sure you want her out of here tonight?” Aiden asked.
Nancy nodded. “You had a run in with kids at the beach. They may talk and if someone sees Mila doing something, which they have, she could be in danger. So yes. Get her to Atlanta.”
“Nancy...” The fox-like man started to say, but his wife cut him off.
“Frankie, I’m not going to sit here idly while this town starts to descend into chaos. First you got beat up,then that girl on Christmas got the cops around here all worked up. Then Tina’s cousin. That’s just the past month. Attacks on mutants are ignored by Tom and the other asshole cops in this town. I want my baby safe. The other kids and I will leave tomorrow.” She looked to Aiden. “I want her in Atlanta as fast as possible and I don’t want the townsfolk seeing her leave. Plus Tina may be a great doctor, but each time Mila uses her strength, she’s sick for a day or so after. So the Tower doctors should have seen her way before now.”
“What about Carmelia. She died while helping the tower.”
“Francis. You and I both know she was visiting friends in Denver when that woman in white attacked. No one at the tower knew anything about her or where she was. So stop blaming them for something NEXUS did.”
“Okay.” Aiden said with a nod of his head. “But I’m gonna step outside and contact the Tower. You all need to say your goodbyes. I’m not coming back after take off. Too much of a chance of being seen. I'll meet you all by the tree line."
Frankie was a few steps away, but Nancy was holding her daughter’s face and kissing her forehead.“Call when you get to Atlanta.”
“I will, Mom.”
The three of them, plus Crystal all headed out of hte house and towards the trees, where Aiden was at. He already had her small duffel bag secured on his lower back. Her mother was due in Atlanta in a few days to get the rest of her things to her.
“Alright. We’re going to take right off fast. I mean zero to ninety in like seconds. So get ready and don’t flail your arms.”
“You ready?” He asked Mila.
She nodded, as she looked to him, he could see tears in her eyes. “Yeah. I’m just...”
“Mila, we’ll see them again. I promise.” Aiden whispered to her, then he addressed the adults. “Tails. Nancy. We’ll keep in touch. I promise Mila will call the moment we’re at the tower. Tails can track us. Until next time.”
Aiden pulled the young girl close and He attached the safety harness. “Keep that head gear on, squirt. We’re going to be moving fast.”
Frankie, Nancy and Crystal all stood in the woods behind Frankie’s house, the moon was giving them some light to be seen. “Next stop, Atlanta Georgia. Home of...me.”
He bent his knees and built up his power. Above them was a clear shot to the sky, no branches at all. He figured at about two hundred miles an hour, they could make Atlanta before New Years. He put a hand around Mila’s head, so she wasn’t able to look down and cause neck strain to herself. Then he jumped up as his power kicked in and up they went.
As the man with the wings shot out of sight, Frankie let out a low whistle. “Holy shit, he is fast.”
